2018-19 Premier League: Week 36 – Manchester United vs Chelsea

Manchester United welcome Chelsea to Old Trafford in a blockbuster finish to this weekend’s Super Sunday, as both teams battle for a top four finish.

For United, they simply have to win to realistically keep their top four hopes alive whilst depending on Arsenal’s result at Leicester, Chelsea could return to fourth with a win or move level with Tottenham on points.

Ander Herrera could return from a hamstring injury for Manchester United but only if he passes a late fitness test.

Scott McTominay and Eric Bailly meanwhile are doubt with fitness issues as Phil Jones (knee) and Antonio Valencia (muscular) remain sidelined.

Chelsea will be without Callum Hudson-Odoi after the youngster ruptured his Achilles in Monday’s 2-2 draw with Burnley.

N’Golo Kante (ribs), Willian (knock), Marcos Alonso (muscular) and Antonio Rudiger (knee) are all expected to be available, although Kante is the most likeliest to miss out as he is struggling to make a full recovery.

Ethan Ampadu (back) and Marco van Ginkel (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) are still sidelined and are expected not to be available until next season.

Form

Manchester United enter this game with just two wins in their last nine across all competitions, but have won two of their last three home games in the league.

Chelsea meanwhile head to Old Trafford with ten points from their last five matches but two of their last three away league defeats came in the North West, at Liverpool and Everton.

Stat Attack

  • Manchester United have avoided defeat in three of last five meetings with Chelsea across all competitions (W2, D1, L2).
  • Man Utd have scored twice in both meetings this season, of which both came at Stamford Bridge.
  • If Jorginho can make 135 passes in Chelsea’ final three games, he will become the first Blues player to produce 3000 passes in a single season this decade.
  • Only ten of United’s 63 league goals this season have come from outside the box.
  • David De Gea has averaged 3.11 saves per match this season for United compared to Kepa Arrizabalaga 2.21 for Chelsea.

Prediction

With just two games of season left after this, Man Utd have the easier climax so victory here is imperative as would put them in a good position for a top four finish.

Chelsea however should win this if don’t waste chances like they did against Burnley, although neither defence can be happy with their performances with numerous mistakes in recent games.

A draw therefore would be a good bet but I just have a strange feeling that United will turn up and grind out a win somehow.

Prediction: Manchester United 2-1 Chelsea

Jake predicts: Manchester United 2-2 Chelsea

Result: Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea
