2017-18 Carabao Cup: Manchester City vs Bristol City – 1st leg

The Carabao Cup semi final stage kicks off with title favourites, Manchester City hosting Championship’s Bristol City in the first leg of their tie.

Pep Guardiola will be hoping that his Citizens can get the job done here, whilst Lee Johnson would love a second Manchester scalp in three weeks.

Team News

Claudio Bravo is expected to keep his place in goal for Manchester City.

Phil Foden (ankle) and Gabriel Jesus (knee) are definitely ruled out.

Lee Johnson is without long term absentees; Jens Hegeler, Gary O’Neil, Callum O’Dowda  and Ivan Lucic.

Stat Attack

  • Manchester City has only met Bristol City once in the League Cup. That came in their very last meeting, just over ten years ago with City winning 2-1 away at Aston Gate.
  • The Citizens have won five of last six home games against Bristol City in all competitions, drawing the other.
  • At home against their visitors, Man City has scored 23 goals to the Robins’ 14 from 11 meetings. All of those home meetings did come at Maine Road making this the first clash at Etihad Stadium.
  • Bristol City has reached this stage twice before (1970-71 & 88-89), losing both ties by a 5-2 aggregate score combined.

Path to Semi Finals

Both teams have encountered different journeys to get to this point, as you can see below.

Manchester City’s path

Round Home team Score Away team
3 West Bromwich Albion 1-2 Manchester City
4 Manchester City 0-0 Man City win 4-1 on penalties Wolverhampton Wanderers
QF Leicester City 1-1 Manchester City win 4-3 on penalties Manchester City

Having qualified for third round by courtesy of gaining European football, City haven’t always had it their own way in this competition.

Despite needing penalties in last two matches of this competition, City however are yet to lose domestically this season and have lost just lost one of their 32 matches overall so far.

Bristol City’s path

Round Home team Score Away team
1 Bristol City 5-0 Plymouth Argyle
2 Watford 2-3 Bristol City
3 Bristol City 2-0 Stoke City
4 Bristol City 4-1 Crystal Palace
Quarter Final Bristol City 2-1 Manchester United

Bristol City have been quite lucky to beat some of the teams that they have and have one more clean sheet than Man City have.

They also have avoided the need for extra time so far, meaning that they will be right up for this clash.

Manchester City will be keen to get this tie over with now so expect them to attack and try to break down Bristol City’s defence.

The Robins will try and defend solidly, particularly after conceding ten and scoring once in last three games across all competitions.

In end, I can see Guardiola’s men having that bit too much in them.

Prediction: Manchester City 2-0 Bristol City

Result: Manchester City 2-1 Bristol City
