Down to the wire

England Lionesses have the chance to reach the final as they play Netherlands’ Women tonight in the UEFA Women Euros’ semi finals.

Given their performances so far, will tonight’s game go down to the wire?

Can the Lionesses go one step further than they managed at the 2015 FIFA World Cup and actually make a second Euros final in eight years?

Team News

England will have to make do without goalkeeper Karen Bardsley, after she picked up a leg fracture against France.

Midfield star, Jill Scott is suspended for this match after picking up her second yellow card in the quarter finals.

Route to Semis

Stage England Netherlands
Group match 1 6-0 vs Scotland 1-0 vs Norway
Group match 2 2-0 Spain 1-0 vs Denmark
Group match 3 2-1 vs Portugal 2-1 vs Belgium
Quarter final 1-0 vs France 2-0 vs Sweden

Both sides enter this huge match with unbeaten records in the tournament.

The Lionesses however have scored 11 goals to the Dutch’s six goals and both conceded once in the same stage.

How much of an advantage will this play in the match’s outcome.

Now having looked at those stats, it is all to play for in this massive game for both nations.

Omens aligning for the Lionesses

Netherlands might be the host nation but omens are set against them here.

Netherlands have history at this stage again against England, who took victory 2-1 in the 2009 UEFA Women European championships.

England know all about how to dump host nations out of the tournament, having battered Canada aside two years ago in their home World Cup.

Since then, they have only met twice; 2015 Cyprus Women’s cup (1-1, group stage) and last November in a friendly, which was won 1-0 by the Lionesses.

This is a pressure cooker game because Netherlands will have the home fans behind them here.

With Shanice van de Sanden and Vivanne Miedema leading their charge, the Oranjes will be difficult to keep quiet but England’s defence have been solid but scrappy on a few occasions this tournament before hitting on the counter.

Another thing that the Lionesses can call on is their past experiences against the Dutch players in the Women Super League.

Against France, England had the advantage of their Man City players having played some of the French women in April’s UEFA Women Champions League semi final, so past experience could well be a factor tonight.

I wouldn’t be surprised if get extra time because past meetings have often been tight but England have too much quality and positive omens within them to avoid defeat.

It will be scrappy and ugly but the Lionesses are roaring into Sunday’s final, albeit probably with extra time.

Prediction: England Lionesses 1-0 Netherlands AET

Result: England Lionesses 0-3 Netherlands Women FT after 90+3 minutes
