Road to Wembley

Man City

Phil Foden’s brace plus goals from Julian Alvarez and Jeremy Doku on top of Ben Jackson’s own-goal saw City start their title defence with a 5-0 home win over Huddersfield in the Third Round, before Nathan Ake nodded in a dramatic Fourth Round winner at Tottenham.

Erling Haaland’s five goals plus Mateo Kovacic’s effort saw City hammer Luton 6-2 at Kenilworth Road, despite Jordan Clark’s brace for the Hatters in a Fifth Round epic.

Bernardo Silva’s first-half brace secured a comfortable Quarter-Final home win over Newcastle, only for him to then net the winner in a scrappy encounter against Chelsea in the semi-finals.

Round Opposition Venue Result
3 Huddersfield Home 5-0
4 Tottenham Away 0-1
5 Luton Away 2-6
QF Newcastle Home 2-0
SF Chelsea Neutral 1-0

Man Utd

Diogo Dalot’s goal and Bruno Fernandes’ penalty eased Utd past Wigan in the Third Round, with Fernandes again on the scoresheet in a 4-2 Fourth Round victory at Newport County alongside Kobbie Mainoo, Antony and Rasmus Højlund.

Casemiro 89th minute winner from a free-kick proved enough for Utd to scrape past Nottingham Forest in a scrappy Fifth Round tie.

Scott McTominay and Antony’s goals forced extra time in a Quarter-Final thriller against Liverpool, before Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo snatched a late 4-3 victory in extra-time.

Goals from McTominay and Fernandes either side of Harry Maguire’s header put Utd 3-0 up in the semi-final, only for Ellis Simms, Callum O’Hare and Haji Wight to force extra-time and penalties for Coventry in a 3-3 draw, but Utd ultimately won 4-2 on penalties.

Round Opposition Venue Result
3 Wigan Away 0-2
4 Newport County Away 2-4
5 Nottingham Forest Away 0-1
QF Liverpool Home 4-3 (AET)
SF Coventry Neutral 3-3*

*Man Utd beat Coventry 4-2 on penalties after the match finished 3-3 following extra-time.

Stat Attack

  • Man City won their only previous FA Cup Final meeting against Man Utd, which came in a 2-1 victory last season.
  • Man Utd lost each of their two previous FA Cup clashes against Man City played at Wembley (L2).
  • Victory would see Man City become the first team since Blackburn to beat the same opposition in consecutive FA Cup Finals – since Rovers beat Queen’s Park in 1883-84 & 84-85 seasons.
  • City have scored 15 goals and conceded twice en-route to the Final of this season’s competition.
  • Scott McTominay has scored in Utd’s last two FA Cup matches.

Prediction

Although they comfortably battered West Ham in a clinical display despite conceding a sloppy but stunning goal through poor marking, City can come into this final full of confidence especially after they won this very final 12 months ago.

Man Utd meanwhile were simply clinical to beat Brighton in a close game despite not dominating possession or shots, but they will need another robust performance especially defensively if want to win this match which won’t be an easy ask against a fearsome attack at peak form.

I however can’t see Man City losing their grip on their title easily no matter how critical it is for Utd to win to get European qualification, but it should hopefully be as close as their two previous Wembley meetings were.

Prediction: Manchester City 2-1 Manchester United

Result: Manchester City 1-2 Manchester United
