2023-24 Premier League: Week 34 – Crystal Palace vs Newcastle

Crystal Palace host top-six chasing Newcastle United at Selhurst Park.

Victory will see Palace stay 14th but move 14 points clear of relegation and secure survival, whilst Newcastle will stay sixth with a win.

Rob Holding is ruled out for Crystal Palace after he suffered a hamstring injury, despite having been an unused substitute in the 5-2 win over West Ham on Sunday.

Sam Johnstone (elbow), Marc Guehi (knee), Jefferson Lerma (muscle), Matheus Franca (adductor) and Cheick Docoure (Achilles) remain absent.

Newcastle have no fresh injury concerns to report following their home win over Tottenham a week-and-a-half ago.

Nick Pope (shoulder), Kieran Trippier (calf), Matt Targett, Joe Willock (both Achilles), Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles (both ACL), Lewis Miley (back), Miguel Almiron (knee), Sandro Tonali (suspension), Callum Wilson (chest) and Joelinton (quad) remain ruled out.

When is Kick-Off?

Palace face Newcastle at Selhurst Park on Wednesday 24 April at 8pm BST, untelevised live in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Crystal Palace are winless in their last five previous Premier League meetings against Newcastle (D3, L2).
  • Newcastle are unbeaten in five of their last six previous Premier League trips to Palace (W1, D4, L1).
  • Eddie Howe’s Magpies have kept clean sheets in three of their last five Premier League visits to Palace.
  • Victory would see Palace win three consecutive league matches for the first time since April 2023.
  • Newcastle are seeking to keep three consecutive clean sheets in the league for the first time since September 2023.

Prediction

With safety now all but mathematically assured, Palace can afford to relax but this is a chance to build some momentum after two contrastable wins over Liverpool and West Ham, particularly given how energetic and clinical they looked in that demolition of the Hammers.

Newcastle though have had a week-and-a-half to rest and prepare for this game after a clinical win over Spurs, and now have the last European qualification spot in their own hands in their remaining games with only final midweek trip to Man Utd looking tricky.

Palace though will certainly give Newcastle a fight now that Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise are back playing together, so I do expect this to be a tough battle and wouldn’t be surprised if both teams take something from this game.

Prediction: Crystal Palace 1-1 Newcastle United

Result: Crystal Palace 2-0 Newcastle United
