Germany forward, Niclas Fullkrug has joined Werder Bremen on a season-long loan from West Ham.

Fullkrug joined West Ham from Borussia Dortmund in summer 2024 but failed to adapt to the demands of Premier League football with just three goals in 29 appearances, and spent the second half of last season at AC Milan where he netted one goal in 20 appearances.

Nuno Espirito Santo has now sanctioned another loan move for the 33-year-old who has returned to Werder Bremen for a third spell, having scored 49 goals in 124 total combined appearances across his two previous stints between 2011-14 and 2019-23.

Speaking to Werder Bremen’s website about his return, Fullkrug explained that he was keen to return to the club at the expense of financial circumstances

“I’ve never made any secret of the fact that Werder is a very special club to me. That’s why I was also prepared to make financial sacrifices to make the loan happen. It was important to me to play for Werder again.

“I had some really good conversations with the club and I’m really looking forward to being back in Bremen and playing in the Bundesliga again.”

Werder Bremen Head Coach, Daniel Thioune has welcomed Fullkrug’s return to the club and is hopeful that the fact that he knows a few players from his last stint will help he settle quickly.

“Niclas is an out-and-out goalscorer. He’s physically strong, excellent in the air, comfortable on the ball and can hold it up too. He’ll definitely add another dimension to our game. He’s also a real leader who sets the tone both on and off the pitch.

“He still knows quite a few of the players from his last spell at Werder, as well as members of the staff, so it shouldn’t take him long to settle back in.”
