Newcastle United have signed right-back, Amar Dedic from Benfica for an undisclosed transfer fee.

Dedic’s arrival at St James’ Park has reunited him with his former manager, Matthias Jaissle under whom he played for at FC Liefering and Red Bull Salzburg.

The 24-year-old has signed a five-year contract until June 2031 and will wear the number 37 shirt, and is delighted to make the move and play under Jaissle again.

“It’s a special feeling and a really big honour for me to join Newcastle United. I’m really happy to be here and can’t wait to start playing for the club and the amazing fans.

“Working with Matthias again was a big factor for me. We know each other well, he knows what I can bring on the pitch and I’m really happy to be playing for him again.

“Playing Premier League football at St. James’ Park is going to be really special. Every game feels like a big occasion, with an amazing atmosphere. I’m really excited to get started.”

Jaissle added: “I’m really happy to add Amar to our squad. He’s a player who I know really well, having worked with him from a young age in Austria and followed his career since.

“He will bring both defensive and attacking qualities to our squad, which suits the style of football that we want to play. He’s athletic, aggressive and technically very good, but also has a lot of potential to develop further.

“Amar is still young but already has a lot of valuable experience – he’s played in the Champions League and the World Cup, as well as representing huge clubs in Austria, France and Portugal. I’m really looking forward to working with him again.”

Dedic began his career at LUV Graz and Sturm Graz in their academies before he moved to Red Bull Salzburg in 2015 but made his professional debut for their feeder series, Liefering in 2019 and went on to score twice in 50 appearances across two seasons.

He went on to make his debut for Salzburg in September 2020 in an Austrian Cup victory away to Bregenz by a 10-0 result, before he spent the rest of the 2020-21 season with Liefering.

2021-22 season saw him join Wolfsberger AC where he scored three goals in 37 appearances, before he became a regular at Salzburg in the following three seasons, across which he scored eight goals in 94 of his eventual 95 total appearances for the Austrian club.

Dedic also helped Salzburg win the 2022-23 Austrian Bundesliga title during his time in the first team.

February 2025 saw him join Marseille on loan for the second half of the 2024-25 season, where he made 10 appearances, before he moved to Benfica in June of that year, and went on to net one goal in 46 appearances as the Portuguese club won 2025 Supertaca Candido de Oliveira title.

Dedic represents Bosnia & Herzegovina at international level with one goal in 31 appearances, of which his sole international goal came in a 3-0 home win over Iceland in UEFA Euro 2024 Qualifying, and more recently he featured in their 2026 FIFA World Cup squad which saw them reach the Round of 32 stage.
