Roundup of the opening matchweek of the 2026-27 Sky Bet Championship season. 

Ilias Chair’s brace and assist for Koki Saito’s strike saw QPR stage a 3-1 comeback victory at Portsmouth to sit top of the table, after Terry Devlin had initially fired the hosts into a 15th-minute lead.

Josh Coburn’s brace saw last season’s beaten play-off semi-finalists, Millwall make a winning start to the campaign with a 2-0 win at ten-men Bristol City, as Adam Randell’s red card left the Robins still searching for their first competitive victory under Michael Skubala.

Adam Idah’s 66th-minute winner fired Swansea into third with a 2-1 comeback win at Stoke City, in which Joseph Opoku cancelled out Eric Bocat’s opening finish.

Aune Heggebo’s controversial handball goal and Jimmy-Jay Morgan’s effort saw West Brom clinch a 2-1 win at Norwich, as Mathias Kvistgaarden netted a 90th-minute consolatory goal for the Canaries.

First-half goals from Sam Dalby and Thierry Gale saw Bolton begin life back in the second tier with a 2-1 win over Preston, despite Jusef Erabi’s late consolatory goal for the visiting Lilywhites.

Second-half goals from Lloyd Jones – who signed a new two-year contract last week – and Tyreece Campbell saw Charlton stage a 2-1 comeback at home against Derby, after Sammie Szmodics had fired the Rams into a 23rd-minute lead.

Will Lankshear’s second-half brace saw Middlesbrough condemn Lincoln City to heartbreak on the Imps’ return to the second tier after a 65-year absence, with last season’s beaten play-off finalists having initially fell behind to Adam Reach’s opener against his former team.

Iker Bravo and Amin Nabizada found the net with first-half goals as Watford beat Southampton by a 2-1 result at Vicarage Road, as Cyle Larin got a second-half consolatory goal for the rock-bottom Saints who got a four-point deduction due to their spying scandal last season.

Elsewhere, Zian Flemming’s late brace rescued Burnley a 2-2 draw at home to West Ham following their relegations from the Premier League at the end of last season, with Max Kilman’s header and Manor Solomon’s goal on debut having initially put the Hammers in control.

Raul Jimenez’s 93rd-minute penalty rescued Wolves a 2-2 draw at home to Blackburn, after Andri Gudjohnsen fired the visitors in front from behind once Sean McLoughlin’s header cancelled out the opening goal of the season from Marshall Munetsi.

Rubin Colwill’s 98th-minute free-kick rescued Cardiff a 1-1 draw against Welsh rivals, Wrexham after the Red Dragons’ Kieffer Moore scored against his former team in the third minute.

Sheffield United laboured to a goalless draw against Birmingham City at Bramall Lane in a clash which saw just three shots on target.
