Manchester United have signed midfielder, Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35m.

Tielemans’ move to Old Trafford came after Man Utd called off their planned transfer deal for Atalanta’s Ederson worth £39m, with the Red Devils instead having agreed a deal with Villa to activate a £35m release clause to sign Tielemans who had two years left on his contract.

The 29 year-old Belgium midfielder has signed a five-year contract until June 2031 at Utd, which has brought his three-year stint at Villa to a close in which he contributed 10 goals and 21 assists in 134 appearances, and helped Unai Emery’s Villains win the UEFA Europa League title last season.

Upon confirmation of his transfer, Tielemans spoke of his pride at making the move and is determined to achieve more success in his career with Utd.

“It’s hard to describe just how proud I am to join Manchester United. Signing for such a special club feels incredible, it is the culmination of years of dedication since I first fell in love with football.

“I have had the privilege of experiencing success in the game and it has only increased my determination to achieve more. The ambition from everyone at the club is extremely clear; we are all determined to push for the biggest trophies over the coming years.”

Utd’s Director of Football, Jason Wilcox added: “Youri has consistently been one of the most outstanding midfielders in the Premier League throughout the past seven years. He has all of the technical qualities, as well as the ambition and mentality, to thrive at Manchester United.

“Youri’s consistency is exceptional, and he will add further composure, creativity and leadership to our squad. We are delighted to welcome a player of his influence and experience, both on the pitch and within the dressing room, as we continue to build a team ready to challenge for the biggest honours.”

Tielemans began his career in Belgium with Anderlecht where he netted 35 goals in 185 appearances and helped them to two Belgian Pro League and Belgian Super Cup titles apiece. before he spent a season-and-a-half at AS Monaco where he scored six goals in 65 appearances.

January 2019 saw him initially join Leicester on loan which proved successful with three goals in 13 appearances, which led to a permanent move that summer and he proceeded to net 28 goals in 195 appearances across his loan and permanent spells combined.

His time with the Foxes also saw him net the winner to secure Leicester their first FA Cup title in May 2021 with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the final, before he was part of their FA Community Shield success just under three months later in August that year.

Tielemans subsequently left Leicester in summer 2023 after they were relegated to the Championship and joined Villa on a free transfer.
