Chesterfield have signed midfielder, Rafiq Lamptey on a season-long loan from Millwall.
Lamptey’s loan move came after he enjoyed a successful loan trial with Chesterfield before the Spireites agreed official terms with Millwall on the season-long loan.
The 20-year-old was delighted to join them after lengthy conversations with manager – Paul Cook and visited Dublin, Ireland, to assess his new teammates before he agreed personal terms.
“It feels good to be here. I’ve been speaking to the gaffer for about a week now and obviously I travelled to Dublin to see how everything is.
“The boys have welcomed me well, I’ve spoken to the gaffer and the coaches and they’ve all welcomed me well. I even spoke to the owners; It was a really good conversation and it made me feel part of the club.
“When I spoke to him, instantly I knew that I wanted to be at this club.”
Lamptey proceeded to explain that fans can expect him to produce composure and aggressive play on the ball, alongside tackles when contributing defensively off the ball.
“You’re going to see lots of tackles from me, that’s for sure. I’m composed on the ball, but you’re going to see aggression. Every time I go out on the pitch, I’m going to give my all.”
Lamptey’s loan switch from Millwall to Chesterfield comes just weeks after his older brother, Tariq joined QPR after stints at Brighton and Fiorentina, with the youngster pleased to have his brother available for a call if he is struggling.
“It’s helped me massively,” commented Lamptey. “Any time I’m struggling or need a few pointers I just ring him up. We speak literally every day, so I have that connection and bond with him.
“Having a brother like that is nice. It’s every guy’s dream really to have a brother you can learn from. It’s perfect, it’s brilliant.”
Assistant manager, Danny Webb added that Lamptey has settled swiftly and is happy that both clubs finally finalised his loan, which will give him plenty of senior experience to take back to Millwall next summer.
“Rafiq has spent a little bit of time with the club already and the observant fans will know that he played for us over in Ireland last week. He has settled into the group quickly and we were impressed with what we saw, so we are all pleased that he’s now here for the season.
“It’s beneficial for both the player and the club. Rafiq is going to get a fantastic amount of experience this season and we’re getting someone who is hungry to play and have a successful season.”
