Newcastle United have signed 18 year-old midfielder, Sean Steur from Ajax in a £23m transfer.
Steur graduated through Ajax’s Academy to make his senior debut in February 2025 as a substitute in a 4-0 Eredivisie victory over Heracles, before he went on to score one goal and create two assists in 24 appearances last season.
His performances ultimately saw Newcastle swoop for him as part of their long-term plans with a £23m offer accepted by Ajax – which consisted of a £20m fixed fee and £3m in add-ons, whilst Steur signed a five-year contract with the Magpies until June 2031.
Upon signing his contract, Steur revealed that as much as he was comfortable at Ajax he felt that it was impossible to turn down Newcastle.
“It’s an incredible feeling to be here. It’s a giant club in the Premier League and it was always my dream to play in the best league in the world, so this is really exciting.
“I was at home at Ajax – I joined when I was seven and I leave with only good memories, but when a club like Newcastle comes for you, it’s really hard to say no. The last few days have gone fast and I’m very happy to join.
“I’m a player who likes to get on the ball and play forward all the time. I’m happy playing between the lines and I feel I have a lot of energy in my game. I just want to win.”
Head Coach, Eddie Howe added that he believes that Steur has the potential to become an integral player in midfield for many years.
“We’re delighted to welcome Sean to Newcastle United – he’s a top young prospect that has already tasted Champions League and top-flight Dutch football.
“We see real potential in Sean and believe he has the characteristics to become a valuable player for us for years to come. That’s something we’re really excited by and look forward to working with him and helping him achieve his ambitions.
“Sean is an exciting addition to our squad. He’s had an excellent upbringing at Ajax, who have an outstanding track record of producing young players.”
Steur began his career at RKAV Volendam before he joined Ajax in 2016 as part of their academy, and proceeded to graduate into their reserves squad – Jong Ajax in May 2024, and has gone on to score one goal in 29 appearances for the reserve team amidst his 25 senior first-team appearances.
