Frank Lampard has signed a new three-year contract at Coventry City until June 2029.
Lampard’s contract renewal comes less than a fortnight after Coventry discovered that their first Premier League match in 25 years will be away against reigning champions, Arsenal, with the match scheduled as the 2026-27 season-opener on Friday 21 August at 8pm BST.
Coventry’s decision to tie Lampard down to a new three-year contract until June 2029 also marked a statement of the club’s intent, after he led them to promotion as Championship champions last season with a 11-point margin over second-placed Ipswich Town in his first full season at the club.
Following confirmation of his new contract, Lampard spoke of his pride at tying down his future with Coventry and tackling the Premier League as he thanked the club for entrusting him with the reins for three more years.
“I’m delighted to have signed a new contract, it’s a real honour to represent this club.
“After the incredible work of everybody to get promoted and win the Championship, it was important to enjoy the moment, and we certainly did as a city.
“Our job then as staff, and for the players of course, is to firstly recharge but also focus on what we want to do and what we need to for next season. There’s a lot of work to do on and off the pitch as a football club, so those things have been on going.
“I’m looking forward to getting back with the players, to see them all and get ready for the new season.
“I’d like to thank everyone at the football club. The fans first and foremost for how they’ve supported the team, myself and my staff in allowing us to get to where we’ve got to. The spirit and togetherness we created last year was something great to be part of and now we want to continue it.
“Thank you to Doug King as well for giving me the opportunity to come to this football club and for his support of us. We work together and we know there’s a lot to do but we’re going to give it everything.”
Owner and Executive Chairman, King added that he is “absolutely delighted” that Lampard has signed a new contract and is set to continue the club’s progress heading into the new season.
“Since arriving in November 2024, our club has been on a huge upward trajectory under his leadership and it is absolutely fitting after Championship glory last season that he leads us into our first Premier League season for a generation.”
As a former player, Lampard began his managerial career at Derby County before he went on to enjoy a 18-month reign at his old playing club – Chelsea, before he managed Everton for one year in which he led them to survival with a game to spare at the end of the 2021-22 season.
He subsequently returned to Chelsea as interim manager for the final two months of the following season after he was sacked by Everton in January 2023, but the Blues could only manage a 12th-placed finish under his temporary reins.
November 2024 saw Lampard replace Mark Robins as manager at Coventry and he proceeded to guide them to the play-offs at the end of the 2024-25 season, which saw them lose their play-off semi-final tie to eventual play-off champions – Sunderland.
