2026 FIFA World Cup: Group H – Uruguay vs Cape Verde

Uruguay meet Cape Verde in a crucial Group H clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Victory would see Uruguay sit top of the group heading into the final round of Group H matches, whilst Cape Verde can go top with a win if Spain draw against Saudi Arabia or they achieve a higher winning margin.

Team News

Giorgian de Arrascaeta is still ruled out for Uruguay with a calf injury.

Cape Verde have no fresh injury concerns with a full squad available for selection.

When is Kick-Off?

Uruguay face Cape Verde at Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, USA, on Sunday 21 June at 6pm EDT (11pm BST), live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • This is Uruguay’s first World Cup meeting against Cape Verde.
  • Cape Verde are facing Uruguay for the first time in all competitions.
  • Guillermo Varela made more interceptions against Saudi Arabia than any other Uruguay player (4).
  • Jamiro Monteiro won more tackles against Spain than any other Cape Verde player (3).

Prediction

With a chance to stay top and have their fate in their own hands against Spain in their final group game, Uruguay have to be more clinical and sharper than they were against Saudi Arabia otherwise it will be a tough ask for them if they lose this.

Cape Verde meanwhile produced a heroic defensive display to keep Spain but wasted late chances of their own, although I do feel like it will need to be more of the same if they’re to keep Uruguay quiet and snatch a late win.

I however do think that Uruguay will be too strong for the Blue Sharks to cope with as the match wears on, barring another miraculous performance.

Prediction: Uruguay 2-0 Cape Verde
