Southampton have signed goalkeeper, George Long on a free transfer from Norwich City.
Long’s free transfer move comes after Norwich agreed to mutually terminate his contract with immediate effect, which allowed the 32 year-old goalkeeper to join Southampton on a two-year contract until June 2028.
He spent the 2025-26 season on loan at St Mary’s Stadium where he made a single senior appearance for the Saints, which came in a 2-1 fourth-round victory over Leicester after extra time in their run to the FA Cup semi-finals.
Long now is pleased to return to the South Coast and target another promotion challenge after Southampton were expelled from the Championship Play-Offs due to spying incidents.
“Absolutely delighted, I was here last season on loan and to make it a permanent deal I am absolutely over the moon and it’s an exciting couple of years ahead. Hopefully next season we can finish what we didn’t get to do last season and get promoted.”
Southampton’s Group Technical Director, Johannes Spors added: “George’s contribution should not be underestimated as a key part of our goalkeeping group whose professionalism is invaluable in driving standards at Staplewood day in, day out. I am delighted that he has chosen to extend his stay with us.”
Norwich’s Sporting Director, Ben Knapper wished Long well for his future.
“George is a model professional, and we appreciate all of his efforts during his time with us.
“He leaves with nothing but our very best wishes for the next chapter of his career, and beyond.”
