Chelsea have sacked Liam Rosenior as manager just three months after he was appointed following a slump in form.

Rosenior’s departure comes after a slump in form saw Chelsea lose their last five league matches without scoring for the first time since the 1912-13 season, including a 3-0 loss at Brighton last night (21 April) which saw the Seagulls leapfrog them into sixth.

The result also left them eight points adrift of the last Champions League qualification which is currently held by Liverpool, who will meet Chelsea at Anfield on Saturday 9 May at 12:30pm BST.

Chelsea also have now claimed just five points from their last nine league matches which comprised of; one win, two draws and six defeats, whilst they also exited the Champions League at the Round of 16 stage with defeats to PSG in both legs in that period to further highlight their slump.

In a club statement, Chelsea confirmed Rosenior’s departure and named Calum McFarlane as interim manager until the end of the season, beginning with their FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United on Sunday 26 April at Wembley Stadium.

“Chelsea Football Club has today parted company with Head Coach Liam Rosenior.

“On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, we would like to place on record our gratitude to Liam and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the Club.

“Liam has always conducted himself with the highest integrity and professionalism following his appointment midway through the season.

“This has not been a decision the Club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season. Everyone at Chelsea FC wishes Liam every success in the future.

“Calum McFarlane will take charge of the team as Interim Head Coach until the end of the season with support from existing Club backroom staff, as we strive to achieve European qualification and progress in the FA Cup.

“As the Club works to bring stability to the Head Coach position, we will undertake a process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment.”

It is reported that Rosenior will receive a £24m pay-out as a consequence of the decision to sack him just three months on from his arrival at the club, having previously managed Derby, Hull and Strasbourg.
