Oxford United have sacked Gary Rowett as manager with the club sat in the Championship’s relegation zone.
Rowett joined the Us in December 2024 and led them to safety at the end of last season with a 17th-placed championship finish.
This season however has proven tough with Oxford Utd sat inside the relegation zone in 22nd position, having collected 19 points in 22 matches.
Club bosses consequently decided to sack Rowett who had overseen just four league wins this season, with Chairman, Grant Ferguson explaining that the decision was made “in the best interests” of the club’s survival ambitions, but praised the 51-year-old for his efforts.
“Gary joined during a challenging period and deserves immense credit for the hard work and leadership that saw us retain our Championship status last season.
“However, following a disappointing run of results, we have had to take this difficult decision in the best interests of the Club.
“On behalf of the Board, I would like to place on record our thanks to Gary and Mark for their contribution to the Football Club and to wish them all the best for the future.”
Craig Short will act as interim manager alongside Chris Hackett and Lewis Price until a new permanent manager is appointed.
