Newcastle continued their Carabao Cup title defence with a 2-0 victory at home to Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth round.

Fabian Schar nodded Newcastle ahead from a 24th-minute corner delivery by Sandro Tonali in a dominant first-half performance.

Nick Woltemade wrapped up victory with a 50th-minute header from Joe Willock’s cross to secure the reigning champions’ passage to the Quarter-Finals.

Newcastle will discover their Quarter-Final opposition in the draw at 10:30pm GMT live on Sky Sports Main Event in the UK.

Having won four of their five matches so far in October across all competitions, Newcastle unsurprisingly began this tie on the front foot as Willock and Jacob Ramsey saw shots blocked in the opening eight minutes.

Harvey Barnes then wasted another chance for the reigning champions as he curled his 12th-minute shot wide of the near-bottom left corner, having met Nick Woltemade’s short pass into the box.

The Magpies’ continued pressure resulted in a 24th-minute corner from which Schar rose highest to nod Sandro Tonali’s delivery in via Antonin Kinsky’s deflective flap on the goal-line.

Tottenham subsequently found life but frustratingly lacked the final touch as Brennan Johnson’s 34th-minute low cross evaded Richarlison’s reach at the left post.

Kevin Danso then attempted a right-footed shot just four minutes later but his effort landed in Aaron Ramsdale’s arms.

Newcastle however couldn’t punish Spurs’ wasteful finishing as Tonali’s 40th-minute cross was knocked down by Malik Thiaw to Barnes, but the winger rifled over on the half-turn just yards from goal although the hosts finished the opening half in control.

If Tottenham hoped that they could get back level early in the second half then their hopes were snuffed out in the 50th minute as a quick Newcastle attack saw Thiaw tee up Willock, whose cross was nodded in by Woltemade to put the hosts in firm control.

Newcastle almost extended their lead further in the 56th minute as Willock fired wide, before Kevin Danso spared Spurs’ blushes with a 74th-minute block of Anthony Elanga’s knockdown header.

Eddie Howe’s Magpies eventually saw the tie out to reach the Quarter-Finals stage for the fourth consecutive season, whilst Tottenham must turn their focus towards mounting a Premier League title challenge alongside Champions League and FA Cup.

Spurs’ unbeaten away record this season – excluding their penalty shootout defeat to PSG in UEFA Super Cup – came to an end with this loss.
