Alex Dunne has departed McLaren’s Driver Development Programme with immediate effect.
Dunne currently lies fifth in the F2 drivers’ standings with an outside chance of the title, and made his F1 debut in Austrian FP1 which saw him finish fourth and just 0.069 seconds off Oscar Piastri in an impressive session for the 19-year-old Irishman.
McLaren also ran him in various Formula E tests this year prior to their departure from the category and had hoped to agree terms on a new contract with Dunne, which ultimately proved futile as Dunne posted on Instagram that he “mutually” has left the team.
“From today I’ve mutually decided to part ways with the McLaren Driver Development programme.
“I’d like to thank every individual at McLaren that has helped me develop and improve as a driver, To have my first opportunity to drive an F1 car followed by two FP1 sessions is something I’ll always hold very close to my heart, I wish them all the best for the future. Thank you Papaya family 🧡
“Still two important rounds left to focus on this year, very excited for what’s to come 👀”

McLaren also released a statement on their social media channels confirming Dunne’s exit as they praised him for allowing them to be part of his journey for the last year and a half, having signed him in May 2024.
“McLaren Racing has ended its contract with McLaren Driver Development Programme member Alex Dunne.
“It has been a pleasure to work with Alex over the last year and to have been able to contribute to his success and growth as a driver through the McLaren Driver Development programme.
“Alex will be released with immediate effect.
“We wish Alex all the best for his career going forward.”#
