Manchester City have completed the £26m transfer of Italian goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma from PSG.

Donnarumma fell out of favour at PSG following Lucas Chevalier’s arrival from Lille despite having made 47 appearances last season, as PSG achieved a quadruple of Ligue 1, Coupe de France, Trophee des Champions and UEFA Champions League titles.

PSG consequently sanctioned Donnarumma’s deadline-day move to Man City for just £26m – having initially wanted £50m earlier in the transfer window, whilst City struggled to strike a suitable deal to move Ederson on until Fenerbahce met their demands for the Brazilian on deadline day.

Ederson’s departure left City free to complete Donnarumma’s transfer from PSG on a five-year contract until June 2030, with both clubs and player having completed the paperwork last night (1 September), which had hung on Ederson’s successful exit.

“To have signed for Manchester City is such a special and proud moment for me,” explained Donnarumma on his move to Man City and playing under Pep Guardiola.

“I am joining a squad packed with world-class talent and a team led by the one of the greatest managers in the history of football in Pep Guardiola. This is a club every player in world football would love to join.

“I have admired watching Manchester City for many years – so to now be able to play for the Club is a huge honour and a privilege.

“I cannot wait to meet my new teammates, the staff and the fans. Playing at the Etihad Stadium will be very, very special for me.

“I am very excited for what lies ahead and can promise that I will give absolutely everything to try and help the Club achieve even more success.”

Donnarumma began his career at ASD Club Napoli before he joined AC Milan and came through their academy to make his senior competitive debut in October 2015 in a 2-1 Serie A victory over Sassuolo.

He subsequently went on to keep 88 clean sheets in 251 appearances for AC Milan until he left at the end of 2020-21 season, during which he helped them win 2016 Supercoppa Italiana.

His spell at PSG saw him again keep 88 clean sheets but in 161 appearances during which he won ten titles with the French champions.

  • 4 x Ligue 1
  • 3 x Trophee des Champions
  • 2 x Coupe de France
  • 1 x UEFA Champions League

Donnarumma represents Italy at international level and kept 74 appearances since his debut in September 2016 in a 3-1 home loss to France in an international friendly, and was part of Italy’s title-winning UEFA Euro 2020 squad which beat England in the final on penalties.
