Former England midfielder, Karen Carney O.B.E has joined the cast of BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing for Series 23.
Carney is currently England Women’s third most-capped player with 144 senior caps between 2005-19 and is currently part of the punditry line-up for ITV’s coverage of the Lionesses fixtures plus Sky Sports’ Women’s Super League coverage.
Across her playing career, Carney achieved 11 trophies in domestic club competitions across spells at Arsenal, Birmingham, and Chelsea – including five Women’s FA Cup titles, whilst she achieved three Cyprus Cup titles and 2019 SheBelieves Cup with England.
The 38-year-old’s participation was announced on BBC Radio 2 on the Vernon Kay Show, albeit guest hosted by Gary Davies, and Carney is excited to hit the dancefloor which commences in late September.
“It really is a dream come true to be a part of this year’s Strictly Come Dancing line up. I’m such a huge fan of the show and I can’t believe I’m finally getting the chance to take part. I’m so excited to meet everyone and get dancing!”
Carney isn’t the only other ex footballer to hit the dancefloor this series after fellow former Chelsea player, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank was the fourth celebrity announced for the series, and the Dutchman is prepared take on the challenge given that it is an unknown task for him.
“Swapping the pitch for the ballroom is certainly not something I’ve done before but I’m looking forward to tackling a fun challenge! Bring on a new type of footwork, with hopefully no own goals.”
