Bromley midfielder, Will Hondermarck believes that “digging in” proved key to their home win over Barnet.

Hondermarck set up Nicke Kabamba’s injury-time goal to wrap up victory for Andy Woodman’s Ravens at home to their London rivals, after Michael Cheek put the hosts into a half-time lead at the Copperjax Community Stadium from Ben Thompson’s free-kick.

The result lifted Bromley up to seventh in League Two table.

Post-match, Hondermarck spoke to the club’s YouTube channel about their success as he praised his teammates for their resilience, whilst he reflected upon his passion for being a grafter from being raised in Dublin, Ireland, after his family moved from France when he was five-years old.

“Yeah I did to be fair. Obviously when the lads are digging in, it’s tough in the moment, after like you said, when you’ve won 2-0 everyone is buzzing so you can’t complain.”

“Yeah to be honest, yeah, just a real grafter in the middle. That’s kind of where I come from. Dublin, just grafting just getting about making challenges, and then when I can get an assist when I can or a goal, bonus.

“Yeah like you said, all wins sometimes you’ve got to dig in. Sometimes they’re not as nice and as clean as like other games can be. So that was part of this game for us.”

Hondermarck was voted Man of the Match but he believes that the result is significant for the team as they kept consecutive clean sheets, having drawn their season-opener away at Shrewsbury prior to the home victory over Barnet.

“Yeah it’s massive for us. It was a tough game from the get-go. A lot of challenges, heat out there, end to end. So I think it was a good win for us, especially at home. First game at home, starting off with a win is massive.”

“So many games in this league, so many goals that be going in every week. So when we’re not conceding, it’s always a big thing.”

The result also marked Hondermarck’s competitive home bow for Bromley following his free transfer from Northampton this summer, although he had featured in three pre-season friendly matches at Copperjax Community Stadium across July.

Hondermarck however noted that there was a huge difference between those friendlies and the clash against Barnet in terms of tension in front of a packed crowd.

“Yeah I think obviously we had the Millwall game in pre-season which was quite packed but it’s very different when it’s an actual league game. There is a lot more on the lines, so like you said, it was a nice game to be part of as a first game.”

Bromley now turn their attention to a home tie against Championship’s Ipswich Town on Tuesday 13 August in the first round of this season’s Carabao Cup, but Hondermarck is keen to embark on a cup run and vowed to take the fixture seriously.

“Yeah we are. To be fair we want to have an upset. We want to go as far as we can in every cup, every league. So we will be taking that very serious.”
