Defender, Arthur Masuaku has joined Sunderland on a free transfer.
The 31-year-old left-back has signed a two-year contract on Wearside following his release from Turkey’s Besiktas in late June, having created 18 assists in 108 appearances for the Turkish club over the last three seasons.
Masuaku’s move also marks his return to the Premier League after he previously spent six years at West Ham between 2016-22, with the Hammers coincidentally being the first team to visit Sunderland on 16 August in their opening game of the season.
“I’m excited to be here and I’m also really happy to be back in the Premier League. It’s clear that Sunderland is a top Club and I’m grateful for the opportunity.
“I had three good years in Turkey, and now I have this exciting new challenge in front of me. I want to bring a winning mentality and joy to the fans, and I’m excited to get started.”
Sporting Director, Kristjaan Speakman added that Masuaku brings “considerable Premier League experience and a different profile to enhance our squad.”
Speakman also spoke of Masuaku’s impact quality across the pitch with experience which can benefit the squad.
He’s a well-rounded full back who is strong in possession and not only impacts defensively, but also in the final third. He is eager to share his knowledge and experiences with the group, and this benefits the environment we are continuing to build.”
Masuaku began his senior career at Valenciennes where he produced one goal in 29 appearances before he moved to Olympiacos in July 2014 for two years, which saw him win consecutive Greek Super League titles plus 2014-15 Greek Cup.
He went on to score twice in 128 appearances at West Ham before he initially was loaned out to Besiktas in summer 2022, which became a permanent transfer the following summer and resulted in him helping the Turkish club clinch the 2023-24 Turkish Cup plus 2024 Turkish Supercup.
