Sunderland have signed forward, Marc Guiu on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

Chelsea’s decision to let Guiu join Sunderland on loan comes as the 19-year-old seeks regular game time following a breakthrough season, which saw the Spanish forward score six goals in 16 appearances as Chelsea won UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup titles.

All six of Guiu’s goals last season came in the UEFA Conference League, including a hat-trick in a 5-1 home victory over Ireland’s Shamrock Rovers in December 2024, just a week after he struck twice in a 3-1 away win to Kazakhstan’s Astana.

Sunderland’s season-long loan doesn’t include an option to buy clause meaning that Guiu will return to Chelsea next summer, where he is considered part of their long-term plans given his potential and age.

Upon confirmation of his loan switch, Guiu spoke of his excitement at providing Sunderland fans with “powerful” quality this season.

“I’m feeling great and really looking forward to the season ahead. I see myself as a powerful striker, who can make a difference on and off the ball, and I pride myself on being a natural goalscorer. This year is a huge opportunity for me to help take this team where it truly deserves to be, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Sporting Director, Kristjaan Speakman added: “In a loan acquisition, we not only have to convince the player but also the parent Club, and we thank Chelsea for placing their trust in us. Most importantly, Marc wanted to come to Sunderland and be a part of our Club.”

Speakman proceeded to explain that Guiu fits the club’s plans for the striker role this season.

“Marc’s a progressive striker who has key attributes that align with the role in our team. In addition to providing a threat in the final third, we believe there are many other ways he can impact games, and we look forward to helping him do that throughout the 2025-26 season.”

Guiu began his career with Penya Barcelonista Sant Celoni before he moved to Barcelona, where he graduated through their youth academy, which culminated in an impressive senior debut as he scored the match winner in a 1-0  home win over Athletic Bilbao in October 2023.

He went on to score twice in seven total appearances across 2023-24 season before he moved to Chelsea in July 2024.

Guiu represents Spain at international level where he is currently part of the Under-19s squad.
