Lyon have signed midfielder, Tyler Morton from Liverpool for a £15m transfer fee.
Morton’s move brings his 16-year stint at Liverpool to a close after he failed to secure a place in Arne Slot’s long-term plans, having made just five appearances last season for the Reds which all came in cup competitions.
The 22-year-old consequently has left Liverpool with no goals in 14 senior appearances across all competitions after a £15m offer was accepted, and has signed a five-year contract until June 2030.
Liverpool issued a short statement wishing Morton luck at Lyon.
“Everyone at LFC would like to wish Tyler all the very best for the future.”
Morton had spent much of his career at Liverpool where he graduated through their academy to make his senior debut, which came as a second-half substitute in a 3-0 third-round victory at Norwich in September 2021 in that season’s Carabao Cup.
He proceeded to make nine appearances in total that season before he spent 2022-23 then 23-24 seasons on loan at Blackburn then Hull respectively, across which he scored three goals in 87 combined appearances – although his three goals all came at Hull.
Morton represents England at international level having appeared at Under-20s and currently at Under-21s level, plus was part of the Young Lions squad which successfully defended England’s title at UEFA Under-21s Euro this summer.
During that tournament, he provided the match-winning assist for Jonathan Rowe as England beat Germany in the final in extra time.
