Sweden midfielder, Julia Zigiotti Olme has joined Manchester United on a two-year contract.
Zigiotti Olme’s move comes after one season at Bayern Munich where she netted one goal in 25 appearances, as the club achieved a domestic treble of Frauen-Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and DFB-Supercup titles before they won the invitational World Sevens with victory over Utd in the final.
Speaking about her move to Old Trafford just a fortnight after her country, Sweden were knocked out by eventual champions – England in a nervy UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 Quarter-Final on penalties.
“I am so happy to be here and so happy to get started and to join this family. I have been watching Manchester United in the last couple of years and, having seen what they have been doing, I am very impressed.
“They are a team that fits me and my style, meeting the players has been great. They were like a family and it was a fantastic way to start.”
Utd’s Director of Women’s Football, Matt Johnson added that the 27-year-old will bring “a winning mentality” as the Red Devils look to challenge for trophies this season across all domestic competitions and in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
“Julia is one of Europe’s best defensive midfielders who brings a winning mentality and experience of competing in the top competitions.
“On the pitch, she has an insatiable work-rate, ability to win possession back for her team and creative passing range.
“This is a player the fans will enjoy watching this season.”
Zigiotti Olme began her career with Bollstanas SK where she managed 17 goals in 46 appearances, which was followed by a spell at AIK where she managed five goals in 23 appearances before she produced 23 goals in 63 appearances for Hammarby between 2015-18.
She went on to join BK Hacken in mid 2018 and delivered 22 goals in 91 appearances as the Swedish club won 2020 Damallsvenskan and 2019 Svenska Cup titles.
January 2022 saw Zigiotti Olme move to England to join Brighton for two-and-a-half years in which she scored six goals in 65 appearances, during which the Seagulls lost to Utd in the semi-finals of 2022-23 Women’s FA Cup then at the Quarter-Finals stage in 23-24 campaign.
On the international stage, Zigiotti has scored twice in 48 senior caps for Sweden and made four appearances at this summer’s Women Euro during which she netted the Swedes’ second penalty in their eventual exit to the Lionesses.
