Coventry City have signed goalkeeper, Carl Rushworth on a season-long loan from Brighton & Hove Albion.

Rushworth has spent five of the last six seasons out on loan from Brighton across Non League and EFL, making Coventry the sixth loan club for the 24-year-old who is still considered part of Brighton’s long-term future.

Rushworth however struggled with injuries whilst on loan at Hull last season and was recalled in January to provide competition to Bart Verbruggen in the second half of last season, due to Jason Steele having needed surgery on a medical issue.

Fabian Hurzeler and Brighton have since decided send Rushworth back out loan to gain further regular first team experience, hence the decision to accept Coventry’s loan offer as the Sky Blues look to challenge for promotion to the Premier League this season.

Speaking upon confirmation of the loan, Rushworth commented: “I’m really happy to get it over the line and now I can kick on now and try and get some minutes before the season starts.

“I’m really excited, I truly am, it’s been a long time coming and now I’m itching to get going.”

Frank Lampard is “delighted” to sign Rushworth who he considers to be “a very talented goalkeeper with quality in every aspect of his game.

“His character and experience will be a great addition to our group, and I am looking forward to working alongside and developing him.”

Brighton’s Technical Director, David Weir added: “Carl has had some good loan opportunities in the Championship, and this is another one at a club who reached the play-offs last season.

“We will be watching his progress with interest throughout the season and wish him every success for the coming campaign.”

Rushworth began his career at Brighton and was first sent out on loan to Worthing in 2019-20 season, where he made 30 appearances that season prior to the campaign’s early curtailing in March 2020, which saw him return to the Seagulls for the following season.

Loans at Walsall, Lincoln City, Swansea and Hull followed, whilst he was part of England Under-21s’ title-winning squad at the UEFA U21 European Championship in 2023.
