Swansea City have signed goalkeeper, Carl Rushworth on a season-long loan from Brighton & Hove Albion.

Rushworth has spent the last two seasons on loan in League Two and League One with Walsall then Lincoln City respectively, across which he managed 92 appearances in total during which he kept 31 clean sheets.

Swansea now represents the highest senior club that Rushworth will play in due to the Swans sitting in the Championship, with the 22 year-old expected to battle Andy Fisher for the first-choice role in goal due to Steven Benda’s absence with a knee injury.

Rushworth meanwhile has signed a new four-year contract at Brighton until June 2027, with the Seagulls holding a club option to extend for a further 12 months.

Speaking about Rushworth’s loan switch to Swansea, Brighton’s Technical Director – David Weir commented: “Carl has improved year-on-year with loans in non-league, League Two and League One.

“Now he is making another step up which is a really exciting prospect for him – we’re looking forward to seeing how he progresses over the next year with Swansea.”

Rushworth also joins Swansea as an international winner, having been part of England’s Under-21s squad which won this summer’s UEFA U21s Euro tournament.

Rushworth could make his competitive debut for the Swans at home to Birmingham City at the Swansea.com Stadium on Saturday 5 August, in an untelevised 3pm BST kick-off.

The 22 year-old began his career at his hometown club, Halifax before joining Brighton’s academy in 2018 and spent 2019-20 season on loan at Worthing in Isthmian League’s Premier Division, where he made 30 appearances before the Coronavirus pandemic curtailed his season.

Rushworth most recently was part of Brighton’s senior squad for the Premier League Summer Seres, although he didn’t make a single appearance despite being named on the bench for their 2-1 loss to Newcastle.
