England forward, Alessia Russo wants “to be involved in goals” following her bright start to UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.

With one goal and three assists in England’s last two group games as the Lionesses secured qualification for the Quarter-Finals as Group D runners-up, Russo is pleased at how they responded to their opening defeat to France but is keen to continue her goal involvement.

“Winning is all that matters but it does feel nice to score

“I want to be involved in goals as much as possible and it felt good. It’s one game at a time but we are feeling really positive as a camp.”

Russo proceeded to praise her teammates for how they reacted to that difficult defeat with dominant victories over Netherlands and Wales, reflecting the pride of representing the title holders.

“Obviously we didn’t start how we wanted to but I think out reaction over the last two games has been really impressive so we want to keep that up now.”

“We love it. There is nothing like playing for your country.”

One of Russo’s three official assists was for her ex Manchester United teammate, Ella Toone against the Dutch although she did set up Toone’s eventual goal against Wales with a cutback pass which the 25-year-old turned onto goal with her initial shot, before she followed up on the rebound.

Reflecting on her close bond with Toone, Russo explained that she is proud that they had been able to translate that friendship into on-pitch performances.

“Playing for England with Tooney, we have such a good connection and obviously she is my best mate. I love spending time with her and on the pitch we have a nice connection, too.”

Toone in-turn praised Russo for her first goal of the tournament in their 6-1 demolition of Wales which fittingly came from her assist – coincidentally a cutback pass of her own that left her “buzzing” for the forward.

“She deserves it. Even though she has not been scoring as much as she wants, she has still been creating loads of goals for us and working so hard. It is nice for her to get on the scoresheet.
