Bayer Leverkusen have signed defender, Jarell Quansah from Liverpool for £35m.

Arne Slot’s Reds began their summer transfer business with the signings of Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz from Leverkusen, which allowed the Bundesliga club to swoop for Quansah in a separate deal worth £35m; consisting of a £30m fee plus £5m in add-ons.

Quansah has signed a five-year contract with Leverkusen until June 2030, although Liverpool have a £51.6m buy-back clause in case of future transfer interest from other clubs, which they can only activate from summer 2027.

The total fee makes Quansah a club-record academy sale for Liverpool, smashing the previous £17m transfer of Neco Williams to Nottingham Forest in July 2022.

Quansah spent his whole career so far at Liverpool where he graduated through their youth academy into the senior team, although his senior debut came away on loan at Bristol Rovers in January 2023 in a 5-1 loss to Morecambe – in the first of 16 appearances for the Pirates.

Summer 2023 saw him return to Liverpool where he established himself as a first-team regular across the last two seasons with three goals in 58 appearances, during which he came on as a substitute as Liverpool beat Chelsea in the 2023-24 Carabao Cup Final for his first piece of silverware.

Last season saw Quansah help Liverpool clinch their second Premier League title, whilst the Reds finished runners-up in the Carabao Cup following their 2-0 loss to Newcastle in the final at Wembley Stadium, London.

Quansah represents England at international level where he was part of the 2022 title-winning Under-19s team at UEFA European Championship, and has since earned two call-ups to the England squad but is yet to earn his maiden senior international cap.
