Derby County have signed forward, Carlton Morris from Luton Town for an undisclosed fee.
Morris joined Luton in summer 2022 from Barnsley and scored 20 goals as he helped the Hatters clinch promotion to the Premier League in his first season at the club, but has suffered consecutive relegations with the team in the last two seasons.
The 29-year-old however won’t be part of Luton’s squad for their push to win promotion from League One back to the Championship, after the club accepted an undisclosed transfer fee for him from Derby.
During his time at Luton, Morris scored 39 goals and contributed 16 assists in 137 appearances and in his first interview as a Derby player, he reflected on what it meant to play for the Hatters and feels that a fresh start is needed at Kenilworth Road.
“I loved it. It’s emotional leaving them to be honest, but it’s a new chapter for me. I think it would be good for them to have some new faces in the door and, hopefully, they can kick on as well.”
Morris also revealed that he discussed his move with ex Luton manager, Rob Edwards who supported the transfer as he praised first-team coaches, Keith Downing and Matt Gardiner, in confidence that Morris can improve under their guidance.
“I spoke to Rob Edwards, who has told me how good Keith Downing is and that Matt Gardiner is exceptional to work with as well. They’re only going to make me a better player which is crucial as I’m at a place where I’m probably the most coachable I’ve been in my career and ready to kick on.”
Morris began his career at Norwich where he made just one senior appearance amidst loans at Oxford United, York City, Hamilton, two spells at Rotherham, Shrewsbury and MK Dons, before he spent two seasons at Barnsley which ended in relegation at end of 2021-22 season.
