Goalkeeper, Max Crocombe has joined Millwall on a free transfer from Burton Albion.
Crocombe spent the last two seasons at Burton where he kept 21 clean sheets in 92 appearances but has now left the club on a free transfer to replace Liam Roberts who left Millwall earlier in June to join Mansfield after a single season at The Den.
“I’m pleased we’ve been able to sign Max,” commented Steve Gallen, Millwall’s Director of Football. “Max played a big part in keeping Burton Albion up last year and they were very keen to keep him.
“Max is New Zealand’s number one and they have already book their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. We hope he will make our goalkeeping department more competitive.”
Burton’s Head of Goalkeeping, Jake Kean is “delighted” that Crocombe has earned his chance to move to a Championship club, such has been his professionalism and performances despite the Brewers’ struggles on the pitch.
“Over the last two seasons he’s been brilliant and played a huge part in keeping the club in League One.
“He deserves this move to the Championship not only based on his performances but his professionalism. He’s always first in and last out – striving for that one percent more that not only makes himself better but the team as well.
“It’s been a privilege to work with someone so dedicated. I know he’ll take this opportunity with both hands and go and be a big part of the squad at Millwall as he was here.
“I wish him nothing but the best for next season and for the World Cup in 2026, where he’ll no doubt feature.”
Burton’s Sporting Director, Richard Dorman added that he is proud that the New Zealand international is an example of what the club want to achieve in terms of player development.
“We want players to grow, develop, and showcase their talent. Everyone at Albion is proud to have played a role in Max’s journey. He gave everything during his time with us, and we wish him all the best for the future.”
Crocombe began his career at Buckingham Town where he managed one goal in 33 appearances before he made a successful move to Oxford United, where he made six appearances amidst loans at Banbury, Nuneaton, Barnet and Southport.
A stint at Carlisle United before he dropped down to National League North and won consecutive promotions with Salford, only to move to Australia in summer 2019 to play for Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory across a two-year stint Down Under.
July 2021 saw the now 31-year-old return to England at Grimsby as he helped the Mariners win promotion from National League to League Two via play-offs, before they went on a memorable run to the FA Cup Quarter-Finals in 2022-23 campaign which ended at Brighton.
Crocombe spent the last two seasons with Burton as the Brewers finished 20th in both campaigns after flirting with the relegation zone.
At international level, Crocombe represents New Zealand where he is their first-choice goalkeeper with 17 senior caps, and was a ever-present part of their run to qualification for 2026 FIFA World Cup.
