Ex Arsenal Women manager, Joe Montemurro has been appointed as Australia Women’s Head Coach.

Montemurro’s appointment as Australia Women’s Head Coach comes less than 24 hours after he parted company with Lyon after a year in the role, and he will officially assume his new position on 16 June 2025.

The 55-year-old Australian described the opportunity to manage his home country as a “honour of the lifetime.”

Montemurro proceeded to speak of the importance of Australia Women’s success to the nation as the team prepare for AFC Women’s Asian Cup, followed by 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil before the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

“This team means so much to so many Australians, and I’m humbled by the opportunity to help shape its next chapter. I’ve followed their incredible journey closely and am energised by the passion, resilience, and identity they’ve built.

“There’s a generation of talent coming through and major tournaments on the horizon. My job is to honour the legacy, harness the momentum, and help this team play football that inspires and unites the country.”

Football Australia Interim CEO, Heather Garriock added that Montemurro is the right manager for the role given his international managerial experience across his home country and Europe.

“Joe brings world-class experience, a deep understanding of the Australian football landscape, and a genuine connection to our national identity.”

“Importantly, he has spent the last decade coaching at the very highest levels of the women’s game in Europe and brings with him an unparalleled understanding of what is required to compete and succeed at the top of modern football.

“Joe has shown an ability to build high-performing teams that play with tactical clarity and attacking intent, and we believe his vision and values are the perfect fit to lead the next era of the CommBank Matildas with professionalism, vision, and distinction.”

Montemurro began his career at Melbourne Victory then Melbourne City FC, during which he guided City to an unbeaten A-League Women title in 2015-16 season before he left for Arsenal in November 2017.

In North London, he led them to the Women’s League Cup title just a few months after his arrival followed by the Women’s Super League title in 2018-19 season, in which they achieved the WSL’s highest-scoring result with a 11-1 victory over Bristol City in December 2019.

A move to Juventus followed with two Supercoppa Italiana and Copa Italia titles apiece plus 2021-22 Serie A titles, before he spent the last year at Lyon who won the Premiere Ligue title – their 18th title in the competition but was relieved of his duties on 1 June.
