2024-25 Premier League: Week 38 – Wolves vs Brentford

Wolves conclude their season in a home encounter against top-eight chasing Brentford at Molineux.

Victory will see Wolves guarantee a 14th-placed finish although a draw or defeat would be enough if West Ham, Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur fail to win elsewhere.

Brentford can finish eighth on goal difference with a win if Brighton lose at Tottenham.

Team News

Jorgen Strand Larsen is a doubt for Wolves after he was substituted in their 4-2 loss at Crystal Palace due to the effects of a recent injury, which he had been managing during the run-in.

Tommy Doyle, Sam Johnstone (both unspecified), Yerson Mosquera (knee), Leon Chiwone, Sasa Kalajdzic and Enso Gonzalez (all ACL) remain sidelined.

Brentford could be without defender, Michael Kayode due to a hamstring injury, although he will face a late fitness check.

Aaron Hickey (hamstring) could make his first appearance since October 2023.

Josh Dasilva (knee), Vitaly Janelt (heel) and Fabio Carvalho (shoulder) remain ruled out.

When is Kick-Off?

Wolves host Brentford at Molineux on Sunday 25 May at 4pm BST, untelevised live in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Wolves have lost two of their last six league meetings against Brentford (W3, D1, L2).
  • Brentford have won two of their three previous Premier League visits to Wolves (W2, L1).
  • All three Premier League meetings between Wolves and Brentford at Molineux have been settled by 2-0 results.
  • Wolves have won two of four home games against London-based opposition under Vitor Pereira (W2, L2).
  • Bryan Mbeumo has been involved in 26 of Brentford’s 65 league goals this season, having produced 19 goals and seven assists in 37 appearances.

Prediction

Having found their scoring boots again in their defeat at Palace after a scruffy few weeks, Wolves’ defence simply let them down against an energetic Palace attack who had come into that game off their FA Cup success, so I would like to see them tighten up a bit but continue to show their attacking progress of recent months.

Brentford meanwhile can’t afford to allow their second-half collapse against Fulham to linger mentally because they now need to just knuckle down and get the win with a more solid defensive effort, whilst relying on Tottenham to beat Brighton if the Bees are to finish eighth.

I however do expect Wolves to produce a strong fight but if Brentford stay switched on throughout then I can see them winning this irrespective of what Brighton do in North London.

Prediction: Wolves 1-2 Brentford

Result: Wolves 1-1 Brentford
