Tottenham Hotspur captain, Son Heung-min was delighted that the club achieved a “special” Europa League title, having beaten Manchester United 1-0 in the 2024-25 final.
Brennan Johnson’s 42nd-minute winner was initially declared a Luke Shaw own-goal until the Welshman was later credited with the goal, after a review found that he got the final touch after his initial touch deflected off Luke Shaw towards the bottom-left corner.
The goal also ended Spurs’ 17-year title drought since the 2007-08 League Cup title, as well as their 41-year wait for a fifth overall European title, and their third in this competition which they previously won twice under the old ‘UEFA Cup’ branding.
Son consequently became the first club captain from South Korean to lead his club to a major trophy, which marked his first major honour in his club career – having never won anything in Germany with Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen between 2009-15.
“We did it!” commented Son who iterated post-match that he had wanted to achieve a title with Spurs just months after he signed an one-year contract extension until June 2026. “I wanted to do something special. Today, we did something special that the people will never forget. It’s such a special moment. Let’s celebrate!
“I never doubted it. We had some tough games, but I always believed we could win this tournament. Today is the day we did it.”
Son also praised his teammates for their efforts in this success as he continued: “Credit to all the boys, they were outstanding from day one. Maybe not the next captain! But the boys were so respectful, so kind, I’m lucky to have such an amazing group behind me, supporting me. I’m the happiest guy in the world.
“I will never forget this. I scored the first goal in the stadium, captain of this club, win the Europa League… what can I say. These memories. In 10 years, I’ve done special things that I will never, ever forget. I’m so happy.”
