Red Bull’s Max Verstappen claimed pole position for 2025 Miami Grand Prix in a dramatic finish to Qualifying.
Verstappen survived a scruffy start to his final Q3 lap to snatch pole position ahead of Lando Norris and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, as the top three were split by 0.067 seconds, whilst McLaren’s Oscar Piastri qualified fourth in a thrilling conclusion to Qualifying.
Q1
Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto was first out on track and set 1m 28.674 as the initial benchmark time which was quickly usurped, as Piastri topped the opening round of fliers with 1m 27.307.
Lance Stroll was slowest of the 16 drivers who set a lap time in the opening run in 16th position ahead of Isack Hadjar, Antonelli, George Russell and Liam Lawson.
Once everyone set a lap time on the second run, the elimination zone comprised of; Esteban Ocon, Fernando Alonso, Pierre Gasly, Stroll and Oliver Bearman, whilst Verstappen went fastest with 1m 26.870 in the 13th minute.
As the checkered flag fell, Bearman, Stroll, Gasly and Alonso qualified slowest with no improvement in positions 20-17 respectively, whilst Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg missed out on Q2 to Haas’ Esteban Ocon by just 0.023 seconds.
Q2
Verstappen was straight out on track and set 1m 26.643 as the immediate benchmark time until Piastri posted 1m 26.269 in the sixth minute to go quickest from Norris by 0.230s and ultimately top Q2, whilst Antonelli slotted into third.
Russell, Ocon, Jack Doohan, Lawson and Hadjar found themselves in the bottom five at the half-way mark of the segment.
At the checkered flag, Russell and Ocon survived as Hadjar improved to 11th ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, after the Brit locked up on his final flying lap to land himself 12th on the grid.
Bortoleto qualified 13th ahead of Doohan and Lawson.
Q3
Ocon was first on track and set 1m 27.407 as provisional pole benchmark time until Verstappen produced 1m 26.492 to go quickest moments later, which saw him pip Norris to provisional pole by just 0.003s whilst Piastri was 0.017s down in third.
Antonelli found himself fourth ahead of Alex Albon, Russell, Carlos Sainz, Ocon, Yuki Tsunoda and Charles Leclerc ahead of the final runs.
Once the checkered flag fell, Verstappen clung on to claim his second pole of the season with 1m 26.204 ahead of Norris by 0.065s, whilst Antonelli was a further 0.002s slower in third.
Piastri qualified fourth ahead of Russell, Sainz, Albon, Leclerc, Ocon and Tsunoda.
