2024-25 Sky Bet Championship: Week 46 – Coventry vs Middlesbrough

Coventry meet Middlesbrough in a straight shootout for a play-off spot on the final day of 2024-25 Championship season.

Victory would see Coventry secure a play-off spot but a draw would be enough if Millwall and Blackburn fail to win elsewhere.

Middlesbrough meanwhile simply need to win and hope that at least two of Bristol City, Millwall or Blackburn slip up if want to snatch a play-off spot.

Team News

Coventry could again be without right-back, Milan van Ewijk after he missed their defeat at Luton due to a groin injury.

Jay Dasilva however misses out after his red card during the game at Kenilworth Road.

Joel Latibeaudiere (ankle), Norman Bassette (quad) and Bobby Thomas (calf) are doubts for selection.

Oliver Dovin (ACL), Ephron Mason-Clark (foot) and Victor Torp (ankle) are still sidelined.

Middlesbrough could welcome midfielder, Riley McGree back after he missed their goalless draw at home to Norwich with an unspecified injury.

Rav van den Berg (unspecified) and Neto Borges (fitness) could also feature if fit for selection.

Sol Brynn (shoulder), Luke Ayling (ankle) Alex Bangura (Achilles) and Ben Doak (thigh) are still sidelined.

When is Kick-Off?

Coventry host Middlesbrough at CBS Arena on Saturday 3 May at 12:30pm BST, live on Sky Sports Main Event in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Coventry are unbeaten in their last five regular-season meetings against Middlesbrough (W4, D1).
  • Middlesbrough have won just one of their last seven regular-season visits to Coventry (W1, D1, L5).
  • Coventry have won two of their last three meetings against Middlesbrough by 3-0 results.
  • Jack Rudoni has provided more assists than any other Coventry player this season, having produced 12 assists in 42 appearances.
  • Michael Carrick’s Boro have won just one of their last five away matches (W1, D1, L3).

Prediction

Starting the game with the final play-off spot in their own hands, Coventry will be relieved to be at home where they’ve suffered just league defeats since Frank Lampard took charge but they will need to be more clinical than they were in their league defeats at Plymouth and Luton.

Middlesbrough meanwhile have to just come out fighting for that win and hope that Burnley plus Sheffield United do them a favour, yet their recent performances in general and away have been inconsistent so it is tough to predict what sort of performance to expect after a frustrating goalless draw against Norwich.

This away fixture also hasn’t exactly been particularly favourable for Boro but with the pressure on for both teams to get something and with similar goalscoring plus defensive records, I expect this to be pretty cagey where one goal could be the difference but if Boro score first then they must kick on until the final whistle.

Prediction: Coventry 1-1 Middlesbrough

Result: Coventry 2-0 Middlesbrough
