Midfielder, Miguel Almiron has left Newcastle United to return to Atlanta United in a £11m deal.

Almiron’s move sees him return to his former club six years after he left Atlanta to join Newcastle, where he has scored 30 goals in 223 appearances and helped them qualify for the Champions League at end of 2022-23 season, during which they finished as Carabao Cup runners-up that same season.

The 30 year-old though has made just 14 appearances this season and in need of game time, Newcastle agreed a £11m deal with Atlanta for Almiron to return to Major League Soccer, consisting of a £8m initial fee plus £3m in add-ons to bring his six-year stay on Tyneside to an end.

Newcastle Head Coach, Eddie Howe paid tribute to Almiron for his efforts at the club.

“On behalf of the club, I want to thank Miggy for everything he has given us during our time together.

“He has been the ultimate professional, and he has been a big part of some of our most memorable moments in recent seasons.

“He is a great person and we’ll miss him greatly, but this is the right move at the right time for him and his family and we wish them well.”

Almiron’s final appearance in a Newcastle shirt came as a 88th minute substitute in a 3-1 away win at Southampton, as the club made an immediate return to winning ways following a 4-1 loss to Bournemouth in his final home appearance – albeit as an unused substitute.

On his decision to return to Atlanta, Almiron commented that he is “very happy” to rejoin his former club.

“I’m very happy to return to Atlanta United, a club and a city that has always held a special place in my heart,” said Almiron.

“I’m grateful to Arthur M. Blank and the entire organization for the opportunity and I’m looking forward to reuniting with the fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and creating more moments of joy together.”
