2024-25 Carabao Cup: Fourth Round – Brentford vs Sheffield Wednesday

Brentford entertain Sheffield Wednesday in the Fourth Round of 2024-25 Carabao Cup.

Victory would see Brentford reach the Quarter-Finals for the first time in three seasons, whilst Sheffield Wednesday look to reach the last eight for the first time in nine years.

Team News

Kristoffer Ajer is unlikely to be available for Brentford after he missed their Premier League win over Ipswich with a foot injury.

Rico Henry, Josh Dasilva, Igor Thiago (all knee), Gustavo Nunes (back) and Aaron Hickey (hamstring) remain sidelined.

Sheffield Wednesday have no fresh injury concerns following their comeback Championship victory at Portsmouth.

Ben Hamer (finger) and Nathaniel Chalobah (muscle) remain sidelined.

When is Kick-Off?

Brentford host Sheffield Wednesday at Gtech Community Stadium on Tuesday 29 October at 8pm GMT, live on Sky Sports Main Event in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Brentford are winless in four previous League Cup meetings against Sheffield Wednesday across two ties (D1, L3).
  • Sheffield Wednesday lost 3-0 in their only previous visit to Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium in February 2021, albeit in the Championship.
  • Brentford have conceded twice in each of their two previous home matches against Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup (D1,L1).
  • All four of Brentford’s goals in this season’s competition came in the first half, of which two goals were scored in the 45th minute.
  • Sheffield Wednesday have won just one of their last five League Cup ties away to Premier League opposition – excluding penalties (W1, D1, L3).

Prediction

Considered strong favourites for a Quarter-Final spot and with their next league game not until Monday, Brentford can afford to go strong in their team selection but they need to be even better defensively than they were against Ipswich.

Sheffield Wednesday meanwhile have lost one of their last six and produced a brilliant comeback at Portsmouth on Friday, underlining why they can’t be underestimated especially after winning all three away trips in this season’s competition.

I however do feel that Brentford will be too strong attack wise but the Owls will certainly be no rollovers.

Prediction: Brentford 2-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Result: Brentford 1-1 Sheffield Wednesday (Brentford win 5-4 on penalties)
