Southampton host Manchester United at St Mary’s Stadium as the Premier League returns from an international break.
Victory would lift Russell Martin’s Saints out of the relegation zone and above their visitors, whilst Man Utd can go at least eighth with a win.
Team News
Deadline day signing, Maxwel Cornet is available to make his debut for Southampton.
Ross Stewart (fitness) could feature but Gavin Bazunu (Achilles) and Kamaldeen Sulemana (ankle) remain ruled out.
Man Utd could welcome deadline day signing, Manuel Ugarte into contention for his club debut.
Leny Yoro (ankle), Victor Lindelöf (knock), Tyrell Malacia (knee), Luke Shaw (calf), Mason Mount (muscle) and Rasmus Højlund (hamstring) remain absent.
When is Kick-Off?
Southampton host Man Utd at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday 14 September at 12:30pm BST, live on TNT Sport 1 in the UK.
Stat Attack
- Southampton are winless in their last 14 league meetings against Man Utd (D8, L6).
- Man Utd are unbeaten in their last 12 league visits to Southampton (W7, D5).
- Both teams have scored in four of their last five meetings on the South Coast.
- Three of Southampton’s five conceded goals in their opening three league games were scored after half-time.
- Man Utd are yet to score a first-half goal this season.
Prediction
Although the Saints’ attacking play hasn’t been too bad aside from their lack of end product, their defence does need to be much tighter especially in possession because their sloppiness proved costly against Brentford.
Man Utd meanwhile were defensively awful in their loss to Liverpool especially in the marking whilst their passes were just as bad, which highlights how much improvement is needed on top of an attack which lacked spark until too late.
Both teams have hopefully used the international break wisely with their players not away on duty, because both attacks need to be polished but if there is a winner then I fancy Man Utd to scrape a result.
Prediction: Southampton 0-1 Manchester United
Result: Southampton 0-3 Manchester United
