Carsley Names His First England Squad

Interim England manager, Lee Carsley has named his first squad to face Republic of Ireland and Finland.

Carsley was appointed interim manager earlier this month following Gareth Southgate’s departure, just days after he led England to more final heartbreak at UEFA Euros as the Three Lions lost 2-1 to Spain in the 2024 UEFA Euro Final.

Aaron Ramsdale has been omitted from the goalkeeping selection as Newcastle’s Nick Pope returns in his place, alongside Dean Henderson and Jordan Pickford who have been retained.

Carsley’s defence will be without Kieran Trippier who has announced his retirement from international football.

Carsley has therefore called up Trippier’s Newcastle teammate, Tino Livramento for a first senior call-up.

Manchester City’s Rico Lewis, Manchester United’s Harry Maguire and Chelsea’s Levi Colwill are also back in, as Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez, Luke Shaw and Kyle Walker drop out of the squad.

Jude Bellingham meanwhile will miss this international window due to a calf injury, with Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White called up to replace the 21 year-old.

Lille’s Angel Gomes has earned a shock call-up as he replaces Adam Wharton in midfield.

Up front, Jack Grealish has been recalled whilst Noni Madueke replaces Ivan Toney, who hasn’t played yet this season due to speculation over his future at Brentford.

England will visit Republic of Ireland in their UEFA Nations League B opener on Saturday 7 September at 5pm BST, before hosting Finland at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday 10 September at 7:45pm with both games live on ITV1 in the UK.
