2024-25 Sky Bet Championship: Week Two – Friday

Coventry City look to rebound from an opening Championship defeat as they meet Oxford United at CBS Arena.

Victory could put Coventry into the top six if win by two goals or more, whilst Oxford Utd can go top if avoid defeat ahead of Saturday’s fixtures.

Team News

Coventry have no fresh injury concerns to report following their Carabao Cup win at Bristol City.

Raphael (thigh) and Ben Sheaf (ankle) both remains sidelined.

Oxford Utd also have no fresh injury concerns to report with a full squad set to be available.

When is Kick-Off?

Coventry host Oxford Utd at 8pm BST on Friday 16 August at CBS Arena, live on Sky Sports in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Coventry are unbeaten in four of their last six league meetings against Oxford Utd (W3, D1, L2).
  • Oxford Utd have won one of their last five league trips to Coventry (W1, L4).
  • Both teams have scored in two of their last five league meetings at Coventry’s home ground.
  • Coventry have conceded first in each of their last three home matches (L3).
  • Cameron Brannagan has produced four goals and one assist in five of Oxford Utd’s last six competitive matches (W4, D2).

Prediction

Having made a scrappy start to this season with a pair of contrasting 1-0 results away at Stoke and Bristol City, Coventry now need to try and lay down a statement of intent if they want to challenge for promotion after a transitional phase last season.

Oxford Utd meanwhile seem to have momentum behind them with clinical 2-0 wins over Norwich and Peterborough, albeit at home so this will be a solid early test of their away credentials for this season.

Des Buckingham’s Us’ though haven’t exactly fared well away to Coventry but given their fearless display against Norwich, I do fancy them to snatch a draw here if they can take their chances and continue to be defensively solid.

Prediction: Coventry 1-1 Oxford Utd

Result: Coventry 3-2 Oxford Utd
