Marseille have signed forward, Mason Greenwood from Manchester United for £25.1m.
Greenwood spent last season on loan at La Liga’s Getafe where he scored 10 goals and created six assists, as he returned to football following a 18-month suspension due to assault allegations with charges eventually dropped.
Utd had completed an internal investigation in August 2023 which led the club and Greenwood to agree that a first-team return wasn’t tenable, hence his loan move to Getafe with Utd’s support in view of a future transfer.
Greenwood was crowned Getafe’s Player of 2023-24 Season to cap his positive loan stint.
His performances eventually led Ligue 1’s Marseille to swoop for the 22 year-old Bradford-born player, with Utd having accepted their £25.1m total offer; consisting of £21.9m fixed fee and £4.2m in add-ons, albeit with a 50% sell-on clause.
Greenwood has signed a five-year contract at Marseille until June 2029 and will wear the number 10 shirt.
Utd issued the following short statement concerning Greenwood’s transfer: “We wish Mason all the best in his future career.”
Greenwood began his career within Utd’s academy at just six years-old and went on to score 35 goals in 129 senior appearances, since his debut as a substitute in a 3-1 away win over PSG in the Champions League March 2019.
During his time at Man Utd, Greenwood was part of the squad who finished runner-up in 2021-22 UEFA Europa League.
The forward also has just one England cap to his name which came as a substitute in an UEFA Nations League away win over Iceland in September 2020.
