Defender, Demi Stokes has joined Newcastle United Women on a free transfer from Manchester City.
Stokes’ move to Newcastle comes just two months after she was released from Man City upon expiry of her contract, having scored six goals in 190 appearances across nine-and-a-half years at the 2016 Women’s Super League champions.
Stokes also helped City claim three Women’s League Cup and Women’s FA Cup titles during her time at the Cityzens.
This move also marks Stokes’ return to the North East, having spent her childhood in the region despite being born in Dudley, West Midlands, and the left-back can’t wait to play for the Magpies.
“I am thrilled to be joining Newcastle United and returning home to the North East.
“I still have so much to give on the pitch and I’m excited to bring my experience to a club with such big ambitions.
“From the moment I spoke to the club, I felt valued and knew this was the right place for me to contribute to an exciting, new project. I can’t wait to get going and meet the team.”
Newcastle Women manager, Becky Langley added: “Demi is one of the best defenders in the country and we are delighted that she is joining Newcastle United.
“She’s an incredibly humble girl as well as being an ambitious, driven northerner. We can’t wait to welcome her to the club.”
Stokes will bring experience beyond just titles, having scored one goal in 74 senior caps for England between 2014 – 22, during which she was part of 2019 SheBelieves Cup title-winning squad and likewise for 2022 Arnold Clark Cup and 2022 UEFA Women’s Euros.
Newcastle will compete in this season’s FA Women’s Championship after they won promotion as 2023-24 Women’s National League champions, in which they lost just one league match all season and will now battle for promotion to the WSL.
