Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg is “very happy” with his sixth-placed finish at 2024 British Grand Prix.
Hulkenberg began the race from sixth on the grid but a mistake at Village saw him slip to ninth but he was able to recover to seventh with a well-timed pit stop on Lap 26, which became sixth after Mercedes’ George Russell retired on Lap 34 with a water pressure issue.
The 36 year-old eventually held his position to the checkered flag for a second consecutive sixth-placed finish, although Haas had introduced upgrades at Silverstone which left Hulkenberg brimming with confidence going into upcoming races.
“I’m very happy for the team, eight more points on the board – super valuable. More importantly, the performance is there with this update and that makes me optimistic for the remainder of the season.”
Hulkenberg’s sixth-placed finish also put Haas up to seventh in the constructors’ standings and just four points off sixth-placed Visa Cash App RB, but he believes that they can be the fifth fastest team moving forward.
“We’re definitely in the fight now for the fifth-fastest team, which is obviously positive and nobody expected that a few weeks ago. It’s very encouraging and very positive.”
Hulkenberg though acknowledged that the wet phase mid-race was tough to deal with as he continued: “It was a tricky race with the rain at the beginning which wasn’t enough for inters.
“Around here with high-speed corners and the grip like this, it was very risky, but we managed to keep it clean and got back what we lost at the start.”
Haas Team Principal, Ayao Komatsu praised Hulkenberg for extracting performance from the upgrades across the whole weekend, whilst also executing a solid race strategy in tricky conditions.
“The updates have worked again and Nico felt it straightaway on Friday, his qualifying on Saturday showed it and his race pace today showed it.
“It wasn’t an easy race, there were changeable conditions and it’s easy to say you only have to put the right tires on at the right time, but it’s much more difficult to do, but we achieved that.”
