German goalkeeper, Stefan Ortega has signed a new two-year contract at Manchester City until June 2026.
Ortega joined City from Arminia Bielefeld in July 2022 and has gone on to make 34 appearances as second-choice goalkeeper behind Ederson, during which he helped Pep Guardiola’s Cityzens win two Premier League titles plus one Champions League and FA Cup title apiece.
The German also was part of City’s treble-winning squad of 2022-23 season which was captured with victory over Inter Milan in the Champions League Final, of which Ortega was an unused substitute.
Last season saw Ortega make 20 appearances in all competitions, which included a substitute appearance at Tottenham in their penultimate league match, where he blocked Son Heung-Min’s late shot as City snatched a first league win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium en-route to the title.
“I am delighted to be staying at Manchester City for longer,” commented Ortega on his decision to stay and feels that he has improved his game since he arrived at the club.
“This is a football club that provides players with everything we need to be our best. Every single day I feel motivated and challenged, and I have improved as a goalkeeper since coming here two years ago.
“My family are really settled here in England… I love everything about it here. ”
City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain added that securing Ortega on a new contract is “crucial” as he will provide “quality, stability and experience. ”
Begiristain proceeded to praise Ortega for his performance and contribution to the club’s success as he continued: “He is such a talented ‘keeper – our goalkeeping coach Xabi Mancisidor tells me all the time how good Stefan is.
“He is very skilled and it’s clear that since his arrival here he has contributed significantly to our success.
“Hopefully he can now enjoy his summer and come back fresh and ready for the 2024/25 season.”
