James Milner has signed an one-year contract extension to remain at Liverpool until end of 2022-23 season.
Milner joined Liverpool in June 2015 on a free transfer from Manchester City and has gone on to score 26 goals in 289 appearances across all competitions.
The 36 year-old versatile fullback and midfielder has also claimed all three domestic titles of; Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup, plus UEFA Champions League and Super Cup as well as FIFA Club World Cup of which the latter three international trophies were all won during 2019.
Speaking about his decision to commit his immediate future to Liverpool for another season at minimum, Milner confessed that he felt “very pleased” to stay at Anfield as he insisted that he won’t continue to take the club “for granted” as has been his attitude throughout his time on Merseyside.
Despite approaching the twilight years of his playing career, Milner added that his belief that he can continue to contribute to the team was “an overriding feeling” of his mindset.
Milner also spoke with manager – Jurgen Klopp about how he fitted into the German’s plans as he continued: “The gaffer was clear what he thought and that was a big factor in me extending my contract.”
The ex England international eventually concluded that he had considered several factors before signing his new contract, as he said: “Ultimately it was a decision I made, with the support of my family, on the basis of the quality of people at the club; teammates first and foremost, along with the manager and coaches.”
Liverpool though will be targeting the quadruple next season after falling just short in recent weeks as they missed out on the Premier League and Champions League titles, after having won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup earlier this season
Milner though believes that the recent heartbreak will make the squad “all even hungrier for more success,” heading into the new season.
