Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso emerged quickest on a rain-disrupted day of Practice for 2024 Canadian Grand Prix.

Lando Norris topped a wet-to-dry FP1 at the death but come the end of FP2, it was Alonso who had set the pace in a dry-to-wet FP2 on a day where the weather complicated running.

Now, here is a roundup of FP1 and FP2 for 2024 Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal.

FP1

Torrential rainfall and hail in the hour prior to the start of FP1 meant that the first 22 minutes were ran under red flag conditions due to standing water, with Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton eventually first out on track once the track went green.

Hamilton on the full wet tyre set a benchmark time of 1m 40.077 whilst Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas aborted his run after two laps.

Bottas however was soon back out on track and set 1m 33.215 as benchmark time but his teammate, Guanyu Zhou stopped at Turn 6 to bring out the red flags in the 33rd minute, having slid on the exit of Turn 5 into the inside wall to damage his left sidepod and tyres.

The session resumed five minutes later with Norris amongst the first back out on track but Hamilton soon set 1m 29.207 to go quickest from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Leclerc one minute later went even quicker with 1m 27.560 to set the pace from his teammate – Carlos Sainz on intermediate tyres, but Sainz soon went 0.075 seconds to head Leclerc and Bottas before a brief lull as everyone pitted ahead of a final run as the sun steadily came out.

Leclerc was first out for his final run approaching the final five minutes as some drivers gambled on the soft slick tyre and as the checkered flag fell, Norris finished fastest with 1m 24.435 ahead of Sainz and Leclerc.

Hamilton, Verstappen, Piastri and Pierre Gasly rounded out the top seven  – who all ran the soft tyre at the end, as did George Russell, Nico Hulkenberg, Fernando Alonso, Logan Sargeant and Lance Stroll.

FP2

With rain slowly returning to the circuit as the track went green with Verstappen first out on track, Ferrari sent Leclerc out on intermediates before the track was declared wet by stewards which caused Ferrari to be fined €5000.

On-track, Hamilton set 1m 34.810 as the initial benchmark time which was soon lowered repeatedly by Gasly to 1m 22.589 on the soft tyre.

Alonso however soon took control and despite Leclerc briefly going quickest on the medium tyres, the Spaniard finished fastest with 1m 15.810 ahead of Russell and Stroll as the rain prevented improvements in the second half of the session.

Leclerc, Sainz, Piastri and Norris set their quickest laps on the medium tyre unlike everyone else on the soft tyre.

Verstappen’s session meanwhile ended early with an ERS issue keeping his car in the garage for the last 35 minutes of running.
