Gareth Southgate has named a 33-player preliminary England squad for UEFA Euro 2024.
Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale has been included despite only playing in 11 matches for the Gunners this season, but he will face competition from Dean Henderson and James Trafford for one of two back-up slots in the goalkeeping selection.
Everton’s Jordan Pickford will be the starting goalkeeper for the tournament after he managed 15 clean sheets for club and country this season.
Brighton’s Lewis Dunk has been included in the squad despite missing the Seagulls’ final match of the season with a knee injury.
Marc Guehi and Kieran Trippier meanwhile are back in the squad after injuries prevented their involvement in March’s friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.
Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell misses out due to his injury woes this season yet Manchester United’s Luke Shaw has been selected despite having his own injury issues as a muscle injury sidelined him since late February.
Shaw’s inclusion consequently meant that Luton’s Alfie Doughty has been left out despite quietly impressing at left-back this season for the Hatters.
Jude Bellingham, Conor Gallagher, James Maddison, Kobbie Mainoo and Declan Rice have retained their midfield spots, whilst Curtis Jones and Adam Wharton have received maiden call-ups alongside the returning Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Up front, Marcus Rashford has been snubbed following his inconsistent form for Manchester United this season, with Palace’s Eberechi Eze handed a call-up after scoring five goals and creating two assists in his last six matches.
Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka will both return after the pair were sidelined in March’s international window due to injuries.
Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke meanwhile has been snubbed despite scoring 19 goals this season as Ivan Toney kept his place in the squad, despite only scoring four goals in 17 appearances for Brentford.
Southgate must name a 26-man squad for the tournament by midnight on 7 June with the deadline falling just mere hours after England face Iceland in their final warm-up friendly that evening, having played Bosnia and Herzegovina on 3 June in their first warm-up friendly.
The FA though have confirmed that the final squad won’t be publicly announced until Saturday 8 June after the squad submission deadline.
England will open their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia on Sunday 16 June in Gelsenkirchen at 8pm UK Time, followed by a clash against Denmark in their second group match on Thursday 20 June at 5pm in Frankfurt with both matches live on BBC One in the UK.
Southgate’s Three Lions will conclude their group stage with an encounter against Slovenia in Cologne on Tuesday 25 June at 8pm, with that game broadcast live on ITV1 for UK-based viewers.
