Manchester City’s Khadija Shaw and Phil Foden have been crowned as Football Writers’ Association 2023-24 Women and Men’s Players of the Season.

Shaw was voted as the Women’s Player of the Season after she scored 22 goals in 25 appearances across all competitions for Man City, who currently sit top of Women’s Super League with two matchweeks left of the campaign.

Speaking of her pride at being voted by football journalists as the women’s player of the season, Shaw commented: “I am very proud and privileged to have received this award and to be recognised in this way is a special honour.

“I want to also thank all of my team-mates. They provide me with the chances to score goals and I could not have won this award without them.

“I also owe such a lot to Gareth, the rest of the coaching team and everyone else here at City. It’s a pleasure to be part of such a special group.

“Many thanks to all who voted for me and to my fellow nominees. It means such a lot to have won this award. Hopefully the side can now finish off the season in style and give everyone special cause to celebrate.”

Shaw narrowly pipped Chelsea’s Lauren James whilst her City teammates, Alex Greenwood and Yui Hasegawa finished third and fourth respectively.

Foden meanwhile completed City’s first double of this award since 2019 after he scored 24 goals and created 10 assists in 47 appearances across all competitions.

The 23 year-old has described the award as “a huge honour” but is “very, very happy” to credit his “very special” teammates and manager – Pep Guardiola for their role in his achievement and making him feel “privileged” to be part of the squad.

Foden went on to speak of his aim to fulfil his potential as he commented: “I strive to be the best that I can be every single day and that is all down to the way the manager and my colleagues always seek to improve and get better.

“I’m immensely proud to have won this award. Now I am focused on seeking to finish the season as strongly as possible and to try to help City win more trophies.”

Arsenal’s Declan Rice finished second to deny Man City a one-two result as Rodri found himself with the third highest number of votes.
