2023-24 UEFA Champions League Quarter-Finals: Second Leg – Borussia Dortmund vs Atletico Madrid

Borussia Dortmund face an uphill battle against Atletico Madrid at Signal Iduna Park, in the second leg of their Quarter-Final in 2023-24 UEFA Champions League.

Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, Dortmund must simply win if want to advance to the semi-finals but a 1-0 victory would send the tie to extra time and potentially penalties.

Atletico Madrid meanwhile know that a win or draw would be enough to see them through to the semi-finals.

Jadon Sancho could return for Borussia Dortmund after he missed their 2-1 Bundesliga win at Borussia Monchengladbach due to illness.

Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (back) and Sebastien Haller (knock) are doubtful for selection, but Donyell Malen (thigh) and Ramy Bensebaini (knee) remain ruled out.

Atletico Madrid will be without Samuel Lino for this return leg through suspension, after the forward received his third booking of the campaign in the first leg victory.

Thomas Lemar (Achilles), Memphis Depay (muscle) and Vitolo (ACL) remain absent.

When is Kick-Off?

Borussia Dortmund host Atletico Madrid at Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday 16 April at 9pm CEST (8pm UK Time), live on TNT Sports 2 in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Borussia Dortmund have won two of five previous Champions League meetings against Atletico Madrid (W2, L3).
  • Atletico Madrid have won one of two previous Champions League trips to Dortmund (W1, L1).
  • Borussia Dortmund have scored five goals and conceded twice in their two previous home games against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
  • Dortmund have kept clean sheets in three of their four home matches in this season’s Champions League (W2, D2).
  • Atletico have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last eight away matches in this competition (W1, D2, L5).

Prediction

Although they trail by a single goal, Dortmund can take heart from the fact that they’re just one goal down because their home record is pretty strong in this season’s competition – but they realistically need to score first if want to stand any chance of turning the tie around.

Atletico meanwhile are a resilient team in their high-intensity press and were clinical at home but face a difficult away test here against a dangerous Dortmund team on their turf, so more of the same will be needed here.

A draw though would be enough for the visitors and I can see them settling for that result unless Dortmund can score first and kick on quickly for a second goal, which is a tough ask against their stubborn visitors.

Prediction: Borussia Dortmund 1-1 Atletico Madrid

Result: Borussia Dortmund 4-2 Atletico Madrid (Dortmund win 5-4 on aggregate)
